The Department for Work and Pensions has announced that it would continue to extend easements for Carer’s Allowance.

This means Carer’s Allowance will continue to be paid to carers if they are self-isolating due to coronavirus and those providing emotional support will remain eligible. The extension is in place until May 2021.

Responding, Helen Walker, Chief Executive of Carers UK, said:

“With national restrictions being in place again, and continued changes to the way everyone lives, we are pleased the Government has extended the provisions, to ensure that unpaid carers can continue to claim Carer’s Allowance if their caring role changes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Some carers will not be providing the same levels of practical care but will be doing just as much, if not more, to reassure the people they care for that things are ok. The emotional support being provided by carers up and down the country will be crucial in managing the anxiety and wellbeing of many vulnerable people over the coming weeks and months.

“Many carers are in financial hardship and have experienced increased costs during lockdown and the Government needs to acknowledge this. The Government should go further to support carers on a low income by introducing a supplementary £20 a week payment to everyone with an underlying entitlement to Carer’s Allowance - to match the rise in Universal Credit that was made months ago.”
